The Egyptian government on Wednesday approved a plan to purchase more than 1 million erectile dysfunction pills from Egypt to the West African market for up to 36 months, after an opposition lawmaker said the move was a violation of federal law and was being taken in breach of the UN Human Rights Council's Human Rights Act.
“The government is taking action against the pharmaceutical manufacturer and distributors of Viagra, the active ingredient of which is known as sildenafil citrate, for allegedly violating Human Rights Act,” Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi said in a statement.
According to the UN Human Rights Council, the sale of Viagra, the active ingredient of which is known as sildenafil citrate, to the West African market is illegal in Egypt and violates the law, including the UN Human Rights Council’s Human Rights Act, the ministry said in a statement.
Egypt and Uganda also have separate laws against manufacturing of Viagra and sildenafil citrate, and the ministry said the sale of the erectile dysfunction pills to Egypt was illegal in Egypt and in Uganda.

Mursi said the ministry’s decision is “illegal, in breach of the UN Human Rights Council’s law.”
“This is a blatant violation of Human Rights Act,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The ministry is taking action against the manufacturer of Viagra and the distributors of sildenafil citrate and the manufacturer of Viagra to the Egyptian market for allegedly violating the law.”
The ministry said the company that manufactured the erectile dysfunction pills had no control over the manufacturing of the erectile dysfunction pills.
“The government of Uganda should immediately take immediate action against the manufacturer of Viagra and the distributors of sildenafil citrate and the manufacturer of Viagra to the Egyptian market for illegal and unlawful use of these erectile dysfunction pills,” it added.
Pfizer Egypt on Tuesday approved a $1.8 million bid to acquire rights to erectile dysfunction drugs, including sildenafil citrate, in the country.The ministry said the erectile dysfunction drugs were licensed for sale in Egypt to the government, but it did not disclose its licensing and sale status.
The ministry said Pfizer Egypt was the largest manufacturer and supplier of sildenafil citrate and was the second-largest manufacturer and supplier of the drug, after Bayer Egypt and Merck P.
